Elizabeth A. Joniak-Grant, PH.D.


Born and raised in Buffalo, NY (Go Bills!), Dr. Joniak-Grant completed her B.A in sociology and philosophy at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.  She went on to complete an M.A. in philosophy before relocating to sunny Southern California to attend UCLA.  Following her completion of her Ph.D. in the Department of Sociology at UCLA, Dr. Joniak-Grant was a lecturer at Sonoma State University and a Patient Representative to the Food and Drug Administration.  She has recently relocated to the Raleigh-Durham area of NC where she is continuing her work as a patient representative. 

Dr. Joniak-Grant’s research interests include deviance, homelessness, social control, interaction, institutions, medical sociology, troubles, and the self.  To explore these areas, she mostly uses ethnographic methods and in-depth interviews, although she is also trained in conversation analysis and statistics.
